Threesome Scramble Golf Format: Rules for 1 vs 2

🗓️ Updated 8 October 2026 👥 3 players ⭐⭐⭐ Careful scoring ⏱️ Rules read in 2 minutes

The Threesome Scramble is the modern version of the three-player duel: one player takes on a team of two on their own, but unlike the classic Threesome, where the team hits alternate shots with a single ball, here the team plays a scramble — both teammates hit on every shot, the better of the two balls is kept, and both play again from that spot until the ball is holed. The solo player simply plays their own ball from the tee to the hole, with no rescue shot of any kind. The format is played exclusively in match play: each hole is compared separately between the two sides, the lower score wins, a tie halves the hole, and the state of the match is shown as UP, DOWN or All Square until the result is mathematically decided. The scramble gives the team wings — two attempts at every shot clearly reduce the risk of a mistake — while the solo player has to produce their best golf to make up for it. It is the ideal format when a strong player takes on two less experienced golfers: the match stays open right to the end.

How to play a Threesome Scramble, hole by hole

  1. One player takes on a team of 2. The game is compared hole by hole in match play (UP / DOWN / All Square).
  2. The solo player plays their own ball from the tee to the hole, as in a classic individual round.
  3. The team plays a scramble: on every shot, both players hit, the better of the 2 balls is kept, and both play again from that spot.
  4. On each hole, compare the two sides' scores: the side with the lower score wins the hole. Tie = halved hole.
  5. The game is played in match play only: the side that wins the most holes wins the match, and it can end before the 18th hole if the lead becomes mathematically decisive.

Team of 2Scramble: both hit on every shot, the better ball is kept, both play again from there
Worked example

Gaëlle takes on Hakim and Iris. Hole 3: both of the team's tee shots are away, Iris's is in the better position → both play again from there, green hit, two putts: 4. Gaëlle makes 5 → the team goes 1 UP. Gaëlle gets back level with a birdie on the 7th, but the scramble wears down her resistance: Hakim and Iris finally win 3&2 (5 holes won to 2, 9 holes halved — the match is over on the 16th).

Why the Threesome Scramble is so popular

Strategy tip

Alone against a scramble, aim for a mistake-free round: the team will make few errors thanks to its two attempts at every shot, so it is up to you to open up gaps with a birdie rather than rely on your opponents' mistakes. As a team, play your roles on every shot: the first player makes sure of a playable ball, so the second can then attack freely, since the worst possible outcome is already covered by their partner.

Frequently asked questions

How does the team of 2 play in a Threesome Scramble?

As a scramble: on every shot, both players in the team hit, the better of the 2 balls is kept, and both partners play again from that spot — and so on until the ball is holed.

How does the solo player play in a Threesome Scramble?

As normal, with their own ball from the tee to the hole, exactly as in a classic individual round. Their score alone, with no rescue shot of any kind, represents their side against the team.

Is the Threesome Scramble played as stroke play or match play?

Match play only, hole by hole. Each hole is compared separately: the side with the lower score wins it, a tie halves it, and the state of the match is shown as UP, DOWN or All Square.

What is the difference between a Threesome and a Threesome Scramble?

In the classic Threesome, the team of 2 plays a single ball in alternate shots (as in Foursomes). In the Threesome Scramble, the team plays a scramble: both players hit on every shot and the better ball is kept. Both formats are played in match play only.
