Texas Scramble Golf: Rules and Variants
The Texas Scramble — the classic scramble, the one simply called “scramble” in France — is the most sociable team format in golf: every player in the team plays their ball on every shot, the team picks the best ball, and everyone plays again from that spot — until the ball is in the hole. The team's score is therefore always built on everyone's best shots. It is the ideal format for mixing beginners and experienced players: nobody “drags down” the card, everyone can play the decisive shot, and rounds stay quick and relaxed. That is why it reigns supreme in club competitions, corporate golf days and rounds among friends.

How to play a scramble, shot by shot
- Every player in the team tees off. On the tee, each team member plays their tee shot — driver, wood or iron depending on the hole.
- The team picks the best ball. Not necessarily the longest: the one best placed for the next shot.
- Everyone plays again from that spot. Each player places their ball at the chosen spot (within a scorecard's length, not nearer the hole) and plays their shot.
- Repeat until the ball is holed. Best ball, everyone plays again — including on the green, until a putt drops.
- The team's score = the number of strokes to hole the ball. One scorecard per team.
2-player scramble, on a par 4: Julie's tee shot ends up in the rough, Marc's is in the middle of the fairway → the team keeps Marc's ball. Both play their second shot from there: Julie puts hers 2 m from the flag → her ball is kept. Marc holes the putt. Team score: 3, a birdie — built together.
Two ways to score
- Stroke play (on total) — the team with the fewest strokes over the whole round wins. The classic format in competition.
- Match play (by hole) — each hole is worth 1 point to the team that wins it. More suspense in a friendly round: a bad hole is never a disaster.
Scramble variants
| Variant | What changes | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|
| Texas Scramble (this page) | The basic format described above, with 2 teams of 2 | The ultimate duel among friends |
| Florida Scramble | The player whose ball is chosen sits out the next shot | Evenly matched teams, more tactical |
| Shamble | Only the tee shot is shared, then everyone plays their own ball to the hole | Those who want to play “their own” golf after the tee |

Handicaps in a scramble
In friendly rounds, many teams play off gross. For net scoring, the app uses the French federation's (ffgolf) split for a 2-player scramble: 35% of the better player's playing handicap + 15% of the other's, deducted from the team's total score. With 4 players, the ffgolf recommends 20% / 15% / 10% / 5% in order of handicap. Clubs in other countries may use different values — check your competition's terms. The calculation is automatic in the app's Handicap Scramble game.
3 strategy tips
- The most consistent player tees off last. If there is already a safe ball in play, the others can attack without risk.
- The best putter putts last. They will have seen the line on their teammates' putts.
- The best ball is not always the longest. One less shot from the rough: turn it down; 20 metres further on: that's open to debate.
Frequently asked questions
How many players play a scramble?
In teams of 2, 3 or 4 players. The most common among friends: the 2-player scramble — two teams of 2 players in the same group, the format offered in the Game of Swing app. The 4-player scramble is mostly played in club competitions.
What is the difference between a scramble and a shamble?
In a scramble, the whole team replays every shot from the best ball, all the way into the hole. In a shamble, only the tee shot is shared: once the best one is chosen, everyone plays their own ball to the green.
How is the team handicap calculated?
The app uses the ffgolf split for 2 players: 35% of the better player's playing handicap + 15% of the other's. Clubs elsewhere may use different values — check your competition's terms. The Game of Swing app does the calculation automatically (the “Handicap Scramble” game).
Is there a minimum number of tee shots per player?
It is a common local rule in competitions: each player must contribute a minimum number of tee shots used (often 3 or 4 over 18 holes). Among friends it is optional, but it gets everyone involved and makes the game fairer.
