Handicap Scramble in Golf: Rules and Team Handicap Calculation
The Handicap Scramble is Texas Scramble, finally made fair. It keeps everything that makes a scramble fun — both players on each team hit every shot, the best one is chosen, and everyone plays on from there — and adds the missing piece: a team handicap worked out from the two partners' Handicap Indexes. The formula: P1 × 35% + P2 × 15%, where P1 is the lower of the two Indexes. This is the split the Game of Swing app uses, taken from the French golf federation (ffgolf) for two-player scrambles — in a competition, the terms of the competition apply. The team handicap, rounded to a whole number, is deducted from the gross score: the net score over the whole round decides between the teams. The result: a pair of high handicappers can take on two seasoned golfers without the game being over before it starts — teams of different abilities compete on a level playing field, with no debate on the range and no calculator on the scorecard. For 4 players, in 2 teams of 2, it is the ideal format for friendly rounds where abilities mix.

How to play a Handicap Scramble
- Form 2 teams of 2 players and enter each player's Handicap Index in the setup.
- Play a classic scramble: both players hit every shot, the team picks the best one, and both play on from that spot — until the ball is holed.
- The team handicap is calculated automatically: P1 × 35% + P2 × 15%, where P1 is the lower Handicap Index of the two partners.
- Net score = gross score − rounded team handicap. That is what counts, not the gross.
- The ranking is on the total: the team with the lowest net score over the whole course wins.
Élodie (Handicap Index 12.4) teams up with Marco (21.0): team handicap = 12.4 × 0.35 + 21.0 × 0.15 = 4.34 + 3.15 = 7.49 → rounded to 7. Their gross 82 becomes 75 net. Facing them, Julien (9.2) and Sarah (30.1): 3.22 + 4.52 = 7.74 → rounded to 8. Gross 84 → 76 net. Élodie and Marco win by one shot: 75 to 76.
| Team | Handicap calculation | Handicap | Gross | Net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Élodie (12.4) & Marco (21.0) | 12.4 × 35% + 21.0 × 15% = 7.49 | 7 | 82 | 75 |
| Julien (9.2) & Sarah (30.1) | 9.2 × 35% + 30.1 × 15% = 7.74 | 8 | 84 | 76 |
A single way to score: the total for the round
The Handicap Scramble is scored in just one way: the team with the lowest net score over the whole course wins. There is nothing to set up.
If you would rather have a hole-by-hole duel, choose Texas Scramble: it offers both ways of scoring, by holes or by total.
Why the Handicap Scramble is so popular
All the fun of a scramble — quick play, zero pressure, every missed shot rescued by your partner — without the unfairness of lopsided teams: the team handicap brings everyone back into the game, calculated automatically, with no debate on the first tee. On the strategy side, do not waste the second player's shots: once the stronger player's ball is safe, the other can go for broke — it costs nothing. And check the Handicap Indexes before you tee off: two tenths of a point can tip the rounding… and the game.
Frequently asked questions
How is the team handicap calculated in a Handicap Scramble?
The team handicap is P1 × 35% + P2 × 15%, where P1 is the lower Handicap Index of the two partners. The result is rounded to the nearest whole number, then deducted from the team's gross score to give the net score. It is the ffgolf split, used by the app — in a competition, the terms of the competition apply.
How is it different from a classic scramble?
The play is identical: both players hit every shot, the best one is chosen, and everyone plays on from there. The only difference is the scoring: each team receives a handicap worked out from its players' Handicap Indexes, and the net score (gross minus handicap) decides between the teams.
Can you score hole by hole?
No. The Handicap Scramble is scored on the total only: the team with the lowest net score over the whole course wins. For hole-by-hole scoring, choose Texas Scramble.
Do you need to know the players' exact Handicap Indexes?
Yes: each player enters their Handicap Index in the setup, and the app calculates the team handicap automatically. Check them before you tee off — since the handicap is rounded to a whole number, two tenths of a point can tip the rounding, and sometimes the game.
