Stroke Play in Golf: Rules of the Total-Strokes Game
Stroke play is golf in its purest form: every player counts all their strokes on every hole, and the lowest total wins. No points, no bonuses, no holes that “don't count” — a stroke is a stroke, from the first tee shot to the last putt. It is the benchmark format of golf worldwide: the biggest professional tournaments, from The Open to the Masters, are played as stroke play over 72 holes. Its strength is also what makes it demanding: a single bad hole weighs on the whole card, which makes it the best judge of consistency. If you want to know your true level, measure your progress or simply play “the old-fashioned way”, this is the format to start with.

How to play stroke play, step by step
- Every player plays their own ball, from the tee to the bottom of the hole. No picking up: every hole must be completed.
- Count every stroke, penalties included. Ball in the water, out of bounds, unplayable ball: penalty strokes are added to the score for the hole.
- Write down the score for each hole before moving on to the next — on the classic scorecard, or in 2 seconds in the app.
- Add up the 18 holes. The final score is the cumulative total of gross strokes.
- The lowest total wins. It is as simple — and as ruthless — as that.
Three players over 18 holes: Julie hands in a card of 85 strokes, Marc 89, Paul 92. Julie wins. The turning point: on hole 12, Marc put two balls in the water and wrote down a 9 — in stroke play, those 4 lost strokes count in full towards the total, whereas in match play they would have cost just one hole.
Stroke play, match play, Stableford: the comparison
| Format | What you count | A bad hole costs… |
|---|---|---|
| Stroke play | Total strokes over the whole round | A lot: every stroke weighs on the total |
| Match play | Holes won, head to head | 1 hole, never more |
| Stableford | Points based on the gap to par | 0 points, you pick up and move on |
That is the whole point of knowing all three: same course, same swing, but a completely different shape to the round depending on how you count.
Gross or net?
In gross, you compare the totals actually played: the best golfer on the day wins. It is the default mode of the Stroke Play game in the Game of Swing app. In net, used in club competitions, the playing handicap is deducted from the gross total: a gross 92 off a handicap of 20 gives a net 72, and can beat a gross 78 from a 4-handicapper. Both modes are in the app: net deducts the playing handicap in full, prorated to the course length — half over 9 holes. Between friends of similar ability, gross is still the most telling.
3 tips for scoring well in stroke play
- Cut out the extra stroke. Going for the green from 200 m over water gets punished on the spot: in stroke play, a lost ball costs double (stroke + penalty). Play for position.
- The double bogey is the enemy, not the bogey. A card full of bogeys can be rescued; two or three “big” holes, never. Play safe when things go wrong.
- Count everything, straight away. Piecing a score back together two holes later is the surest way to get it wrong — write it down (or enter it) there and then, on the green.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between stroke play and match play?
In stroke play, you add up every stroke over the round and the lowest total wins. In match play, every hole is a duel: you count holes won, not strokes. A disaster on one hole costs a lot in stroke play, but just one hole in match play.
Can you pick up your ball in stroke play?
No — in strict stroke play, every hole must be completed, with the ball holed. That is what makes the format demanding. If you want to be able to pick up on a bad hole, play Stableford instead.
Is stroke play played gross or net?
Both exist. In gross, you compare the strokes actually played. In net, the playing handicap is deducted from the gross total before comparing, which levels out abilities in competition. The app's Stroke Play game offers both, chosen when you set up the game.
Do penalty strokes count in the score?
Yes, in full: every penalty stroke (water, out of bounds, unplayable ball…) is added to the score for the hole like a stroke played. Score for the hole = strokes played + penalties.
